Bedwetting problems in adulthood is something we do not talk about. There are studies that claim that 1 to 2 percent of adults wet the bed. The problem with these statistics is that many researchers think that the number is underreported because of embarrassment. If you wet the bed one time as an adult you most likely have nothing to worry about but if it’s a frequent problem you need to talk to a doctor. Bedwetting or enuresis can affect lack of sleep, low self-esteem and shame.

What can cause enuresis?

  • The first thing to check is that the enuresis isn’t caused by any medication. If that’s the case, talk to your doctor about the side effects you are having.
  • Diet – A lot of alcohol and caffeine during the day can cause bladder instability and increase the production of urine.
  • Hormonal – One cause of enuresis can be that the hormone ADH is not produced enough during the night to slow down the urine production.
  • Structural – Other causes to bedwetting that are more severe can be prostate cancer, bladder cancer, urinary tract stones, diabetes, and enlarged prostate
  • Genetics – Studies have shown that if someone has two bedwetting parents their child has a 77% risk of becoming a bedwetter. If just one parent is a bedwetter their child has a 40% risk of becoming a bedwetter and were no parents wet the bed, the risk is 15%.

Treatments

There are a lot of different treatments to get the enuresis under control. The first thing is to limit the intake of fluids in the afternoon and evening to decrease urine production during nights. Also, make a routine when to urinate during the day and before you go to bed. Bedwetting alarms can help because it wakes you up when you urinate and allows you to stop.
